The AICTE committee has said; students need not feel a dilemma as an official announcement will be made if and when any such decision will be finalized. And for the following year 2019, GATE may not be mandatory as an exit exam to get a B.Tech degree.

GATE as Exit Exam for Engineering Graduates – The Concept

The basic idea behind the concept”GATE Mandatory To Get B.E/B.Tech Degree” is to check aptitude, skills and critical thinking of the students in extension to their theoretical knowledge.

Conducting GATE as the exit exam for getting Engineering degree will benefit in followings ways:

  • The test will help to check the attainment level of students for prestigious jobs.
  • This will also reveal the teaching standards of the Engineering colleges in India.
  • AICTE can suggest some remedial strategies to make strides for the poor performing Engineering colleges.
  • The Engineering colleges will also start emphasizing on various skill& personality development methodology along with the old school methods of study.
  • Preparing for GATE exam will increase the chance of employment as of now only 20% to 30% of the total graduates every year get to be seated on decent positions. (The actual count of Engineering pass out every year is around 7 lakhs in India).

If the GATE exam becomes a mandatory exit examination for the final year Engineering students then both the government and private institutions have to follow this.

Every engineering student will have to get through the exam with a good score as the government plans to share their scores with prospective employers.

The GATE cutoff list is released by the GATE exam organizing institute (like IIT, Madras for the year 2019) and is based on GATE scores

The admission cutoff list is released by individual institutes and applied to their own institutes only and is based on few factors. The following factors are considered by authorities while preparing the GATE Cutoff list every year:

  • Number of seats available
  • The difficulty level of the exam
  • Number of candidates appeared
  • Previous year’s cutoff trend
